Serena’s Potty Mouth Sets Record Fines

At this year’s US Open one of the more unforgettable moments involved Serena Williams screaming obscenities at a line judge over a foot fault call. Despite a heartfelt apology , Williams has been fined $82,500 for the incident and has been put on probation for the next two years. The ruling, handed down by the Grand Slam committee, is the largest fine ever for a Grand Slam offense. This title was previously held by Jeff Tarango, who was fined $48,000 in the ’90s for walking off a Wimbledon match and verbally attacking an umpire. If Williams incurs another “major offense” at a Grand Slam in the next two years, she will be suspended from the US Open in 2010, 2011, or 2012, and her fine will increase to $175,000. In case you missed it, Serena told the line judge: “I’m going to shove this [expletive] ball down your [expletive] throat.” Williams also swatted her racket at the judge’s general direction and used finger-jabbing to reinforce her point. At the time, the display of behavior cost Williams $10,000 - the maximum penalty a player can receive on site. The onsite penalty fine will be deducted from the current ruling. The maximum fine of $175,000 was chosen because it is the difference in winnings between reaching the quarter finals and semifinals in the US Open.

Save Money and Calories: Coffee at Your Desk

There are a lot of hidden calories in espresso drinks , especially holiday offerings like pumpkin spice lattes . A cup of plain coffee is usually a safe bet calorie wise but buying one cup a day can easily amount to five hundred dollars a year. Some break rooms have coffee machines but the stuff that comes out of those things are usually pretty gross tasting. With a little creativity (and a hot water source) you can enjoy a good, cheap cup of coffee right at your desk. Not only will it taste better and save you money, it will also allow you to cut back on waste by eliminating all those paper cups. To get started you’ll need a mug and some coffee beans. I like to buy good coffee beans since they can really make or break how coffee tastes. Buying good beans is still cheaper than going out for coffee everyday. Have your local coffee shop grind the beans, or for ultimate freshness bring a small coffee grinder to the office. Decide how you’ll brew your coffee. A reusable single cup filter tends to be the easiest method, but you can also opt for a 12-ounce french press or an automatic single cup coffeemaker . Now all you need is hot water. Most offices have a water cooler with a hot water spigot or a microwave that you can use to heat water up. For a few more tips, read more. I keep a small carton of milk in the office refrigerator to add to my coffee, but in a pinch I’ve also used shelf stable organic non-dairy creamer . If you like the flavors of Fall make a nice spice mix of nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves to sprinkle over the top. Another option is nixing the mini coffee station altogether, and asking if any of your co-workers (or boss) can chip in for an office coffee maker and weekly allowance of beans. A shout-out to Fit tea drinkers: don’t be embarrassed to set up a mini tea station at your desk too! I always keep a variety of tea bags at my desk when I need a pick-me-up.

Strike a Yoga Pose: Head to Knee B

Runners and other athletes need to spend extra time stretching their hamstrings. If you like the Head to Knee A pose, you’re going to love this variation that will stretch the part of your hamstring closest to your glutes. I always do this stretch after a run. This pose looks very similar to Head to Knee A, but to see what the difference is read more. Begin in a seated position with both legs straight out in front of you. Bend your right knee and place the sole of your foot against your inner thigh, pulling your heel as close to your body as you can. Sit up nice and tall, lengthening through the spine and keeping your left leg straight. Press your hands into the floor and lift your hips up so they’re higher than your right foot. Slide your left heel away from you slightly as you shift your torso forward, coming to sit on the arch of your flexed right foot. Then fold your torso over your left leg. Rest your hands on the floor on either side of your leg or on your shin. Or if your hamstrings and hips are more flexible, reach for your foot - the right hand holds the left wrist. Rest your forehead on your leg and stay here for five breaths, being sure to continue lengthening the spine as you relax the shoulders away from your ears. Then release your hands, sit up, and either take a vinyasa to switch sides, or just switch sides from here. This time the left knee will be bent, and the left hand will hold the right wrist. Have any burning questions about yoga? Then post them to the Yoga Stretch and Tell group.

Your First Negative Split Run
November 30, 2009 by admin

Taking the second half of your run at a faster pace is great prep for the negative split racing strategy ; where you start out slowly, then push your pace at or just before the middle mark. Aside from being a racing strategy, saving your speed for the second half of the run means your body will be completely warmed up and ready to be pushed. Just because the weather is cooling doesn’t mean you should leave your speed work out in the cold. Try a negative split run the next time you head out the door. Find an “out and back” run. I use Map My Run for this. Warm up by either mileage or time but pick some kind of physical marker, which will be your starting and stopping point for the main part of your run. I always use a specific intersection for starting the main part of my run after warming up for a half mile into my run for a short run, or a mile into a longer run. Once you start your main run, set your stopwatch. Run at your predetermined pace and when you reach your turn around point, check how long it took you to reach the midway point. If your watch has a lap/split button press it as you turn around. Return on the same route but at a slightly faster pace - 10 to 20 seconds faster per mile than your previous pace. If you’re running without a watch or haven’t set the distance marker to know the miles on your route. Just push yourself a bit, but just enough to maintain a steady pace on your return mileage. Check your watch when you reach the start spot for the main part of your run, and begin cooling down. Your return time should be less than the time it took you to reach the midway point. Finish cooling down. Note your time mentally and see if you can beat it next time. Have your own running workout to share? Post it on RunningSugar .
