If you have a special someone in your life who loves to surf, then you know that riding waves is a lifestyle, not a hobby. Here are a few picks that will show your surf Betty that you really get her. Warning: these items will have her running away from you and straight to the ocean. Soleo Organics Sunscreen SPF 30 ($20). Finally an all-natural, organic sunscreen that can hold up even against the weight of the ocean. Unscented and made with nurturing grape seed oil, green tea, and chamomile. Surfing: Women of the Waves ($20). Beautiful photos that will inspire newbies and pros alike to get out there and catch waves. Featuring women of all sizes, styles, and levels hanging ten all over the world. Billabong Wylie Rashguard ($28). Though sporting a bikini might look stylish, paddling all day on a surfboard can really hurt the skin. Eliminate skin irritation and extreme sun exposure with this stylish rashguard from Billabong. Tide Clock ($55) Knowing what the tide is doing is a close second to breathing for a surfer. This clock will help her know when it’s high or low tide, which makes planning her day that much easier.

I might know this intellectually, but Hannah my swim coach at Equinox decided my freestyle breathing needed an overhaul. To prove her point, she even took a video of my form. Since my swim lesson last week, I have been paying extra attention to my breathing in all forms of exercise, from yoga to running, as well as when I am in the pool and I urge you to check your own breath. Are you unconsciously holding it at any point when you’re working out? Are you raising your shoulders to inhale? When you inhale are you only filling the top portion of your lungs? This is a great little tool and if you’re feeling bored with your workout, it gives you something productive to work with rather than watching the clock.
