Henna Tattoos: All in Good Fun or a Health Risk?

A couple weeks ago, I went to my local farmers market and celebrated my growing baby bump by getting a henna tattoo . I’ve had henna done many times before on my hands and feet, so having my pregnant belly done was something I’d always wanted to do. You have to keep the area exposed for a few hours so the henna paste can dry, so while walking around the market, I got many smiles and sweet comments. But one person said to me, “Oh how beautiful, but isn’t that bad for your baby?” I felt like being snippy and saying, “Yes, of course it’s bad for my baby. I like to do harmful things to my unborn child.” But instead of being snarky, I explained that henna tattoos are completely safe for your skin, your body, and a growing baby. Also known as Mehndi , these tattoos are not actually permanent and only last between one and two weeks, depending on your skin, the quality of the henna, and how often you wash the area. The tattoo is applied in the form of a paste that looks like chocolate frosting. It’s made by grinding up dried leaves from the henna plant and is mixed with water, lemon, and essential oils. After the paste dries, it’s peeled or picked off after about 24 hours, and you’re left with an orangey-brown tattoo that stains the first few layers of your skin. This henna is completely safe, but there is a type of henna that is bad for your skin. To hear about it, read more. There is a trend among some henna artists to apply something called black henna , which will stain your skin black instead of brown. This type of henna is dangerous because it contains paraphenylenediamine (PPD), a hair dye. When applied to your skin, it may look like a real tattoo, but allergic reactions to PPD can cause blisters, open sores, and scarring. It’s easy to tell traditional natural henna apart from black henna. Traditional henna paste will look dark green, khaki, or greenish brown, not black, so if a henna artist is applying a slick black paste, do not get a tattoo from her. You can also ask the artist how long you’re supposed to leave the paste on. If they say less than one hour, they’re using PPD. Traditional henna doesn’t stain your skin that quickly. Also ask the artist what color the stain will be once the paste comes off. Henna will leave an orange stain that will darken to red brown or dark brown, but it’s never black. If you’re just not sure, it’s best to skip out on the henna tattoo or apply it yourself with a home henna kit .

Holy zucchinis! I wanted to plant two different kinds in my garden, and since the seedlings came in packs of four, my eight plants are bursting with gorgeous green veggies. I’ve grilled it, stuffed it with quinoa , made Creamy Zucchini Boats , and pan-fried Zucchini Latkes , but this weekend I was in the mood for something sweet. I thought, why not combine two of my favorite bread recipes - zucchini and banana. The combination is more amazing than I thought it would be. Interested in seeing my recipe? Then keep reading.

Do You Apply Sunscreen Every Day?

With Summer officially here and sunny days the norm, wearing a sunscreen has never been so important. Even though I always wear sunscreen on my face, I am not very good at remembering to wear it on other parts of my body. Dumb, I know. But after returning from the beach with a slight sunburn, I’ve been doing my best to apply it to the rest of my body every day too. By investing in a moisturizing sunscreen I’ve made it easy on myself because I don’t have to put on a sunblock before a moisturizing lotion. Besides preventing sunburn, wearing a UVA/UVB sunscreen is defense against wrinkles, sun spots, and, most importantly, skin cancer . And while it might be a pain to do this every morning, it’s worth the benefits. How about you . . . Do You Apply Sunscreen Every Day? Yes, but only to my face. Yes, to my entire body. No

Gear Review: Rebel Sports Bra by Nike

As a runner with a not-so-tiny chest, I’m always on the hunt for a more comfortable, more supportive sports bra . When I heard about Nike ’s new Rebel Sports Bra featuring several new, supportive features, I had the company send me one to test out. The Rebel is designed to “deliver the benefits of an underwire bra without the wire,” and promises vertical, horizontal, and surround support in four areas: chest band, cups, shoulder straps, and wings. Remembering the size small Nike sports bra I still squeeze myself into on occasion (hello, uniboob), I opted to test out a medium. Because I have an exactly 33-inch ribcage, I toggle back and forth between wearing 32-inch and 34-inch bras. And while I’m not too busty , I do have trouble squeezing into a cup-less sports bra, especially the aforementioned Nike model. Unfortunately, the Rebel seems to run truer to size, and was a tad on the large side. Luckily, both shoulder straps and the chest band are adjustable, so after hooking each to the smallest possible size, I felt supported enough to tackle a five-mile run. Learn the verdict on the Nike Rebel when you keep reading.

The following post was written by Olympic athlete and mom Kerri Walsh , two-time gold medalist in beach volleyball . The mother of two, one being a newborn, shares her top five nutrition tips for new moms. Indulge Your Cravings : During and after pregnancy, your body sends strong signals about what it needs, so be sure to listen and respond, but be smart about it. If you’re dying for some ice cream, try Greek yogurt, which is much lower in sugar and higher in protein. Eat Your Water and Drink Your Veggies : Since I’m nursing, I’m constantly thirsty. According to my friend Dr. Murad , eating foods that are rich in structured water, especially raw fruits and vegetables, will not only help your body hold onto water longer, you’ll get the added boost of important antioxidants, fiber, and other nutrients. I like to do double duty by drinking Nano Greens , which are not only hydrating but also contain 10 servings of fruits and vegetables. To learn a few more of Kerri’s nutrition tips, keep reading .

OnSugar Blog: Tea Oats, Toats

This post comes from OnSugar blog Sophie’s Sweeties . I love oatmeal and all of its carby goodness. Hopefully you do too because I have a lot of oatmeal recipes to post. This is my latest oatmeal concoction, and it is fabulous. Ingredients: 1/4 cup oatmeal (I used Coach’s Oats) 1 & 1/2 cups brewed chai (I used Tazo, but any kind will do) 1/2 mashed banana 1 Splenda packet almonds, raisins, and pumpkin seeds to garnish Cooking tip: I like my oatmeal really creamy, and this cooking tip seems to really do the trick. Combine oatmeal and 1 cup of the chai the night before, bring to a boil for just a quick second, and then turn off the heat and cover the pot with a lid. In the morning add the other 1/2 cup of chai, mashed banana, Splenda, and finish cooking the oatmeal like you normally would. Tea oats are heavenly in general, but so far chai flavored has been my ultimate fave. For another “toats” recipe, keep reading.
