Marisa Tomei Covers Shape: "I Graze Every Few Hours"

Actress Marisa Tomei, 45, barely looks like she’s aged since winning an Oscar for her performance in My Cousin Vinny 18 years ago. And that’s partly because she lives life to the fullest, giving everything a childlike vibrancy - even her workouts. As Shape ’s August cover girl, Marisa shares her go-to hula-hoop workout with readers, and how she stays so darn happy. Here are the highlights: On her love of dance : “It’s not like jogging, where you’re working on your exterior. It’s about feeling the interior and being at home in your body. Movement is truly transformative.” On eating with the seasons : “I keep my meals really simple because when the ingredients are this fresh, you don’t have to do that much.” On buying local : “It’s not just about buying local fresh food, which then, translates into healthy things for your body and skin. It’s also about being part of the community and looking the people in the eye who have grown that food. All of these connections add to the vibrancy of life.” On her daily detox : “I never got into coffee. It may take me a little longer to get going than other people, but this [hot water with lemon] just feels really cleansing in the morning.” On hula-hooping : “Once I started doing it regularly, I felt like hooping worked all the little muscles around my body - it shimmied everything into place!”

The Best Health Advice You’ve Ever Received Was . . .

I recently told you that the best fitness advice I ever received was, “In order to lose weight, you need to up your cardio.” This little gem really helped kick my butt into gear to lose the extra weight I gained while living it up in my college days. I asked you to share the best advice you’ve heard regarding health and fitness and here’s what you said. “Losing weight is about diet not exercise.” - onlysourcherry “You can’t out-exercise crappy eating!” - anonymous reader ksduffster “I think you, FitSugar, had something on here about your shape being 20% working out and 80% what you eat. That changed how I thought about getting ‘in shape.’” - brindey Graze With Me lives by this key phrase: “Respect your fullness & honor your hunger.” “Be the healthiest version of me that I can be.” - GlowingMoon 2muchtv says, “Be active in everything, not just the hour you spend exercising.” I have only included a few bits of wisdom, so if you want to hear the other great advice and tips, head over to the original post .

DVD Review: Marisa Tomei Core & Curves

Filed under: Fitness , Celebs & Entertainment gaiam.com When you hear the name Marisa Tomei, you probably think of one of her famous movie roles, such as ” My Cousin Vinny ,” which is definitely my favorite. When you consider the fact that Tomei has been making films since 1984 and still looks absolutely amazing, it’s obvious that she’s got the diet and fitness thing down. But does that make her a good candidate to star in a fitness DVD ? Marisa Tomei Core & Curves is the actress’ new workout DVD, which is divided into three sections: Body Definition (20 minutes) which incorporates light cardio and resistance training, Best Legs Workout (15 minutes) to target trouble zones on your lower half and Ten Moves in Ten (10 minutes) for a quick and effective workout. Tomei teams up with trainer Key Son — he instructs and gives pointers while she demonstrates each move, occasionally offering tips or saying what she finds challenging about a particular move. The DVD comes with a Gaiam toning band used in many of the moves (you can buy another one separately, too, if you want to work out with a friend). It gives you the option of doing just one part or all three in any order you like; additionally, you can opt to hear music with instruction or instruction only. Level of Difficulty Intermediate. Next Day Soreness Slight. Who’s It For? Obviously, fans of Tomei will enjoy this. It’s also great for those who like their workouts a bit more low-key — it’s not easy, mind you, but it’s not high energy. Likes I did a lot of moves that I’ve never tried before while reviewing this DVD, which was great. The workouts feature lots of small motions, so they don’t look nearly as impressive as they feel (because, trust me, you’ll feel them). You might not end up gasping for breath like you would with some circuit training workouts, but you’ll be awfully glad when each exercise ends. As I mentioned, this is a pretty low-key DVD, and I’m not sure how I feel about that. On the one hand, it was nice to have a calm presence for a morning workout — I don’t need to be screamed at before my coffee. But personally, I had a hard time really “getting into” the workout because it was so calm. Dislikes There are a few exercises that require a great deal of space — problematic for many of us without an enormous living room. Also, there are a lot of crunches. Like, a lot . Personally, I’d much rather do something else that works my core. Bottom Line This is a solid workout, no doubt about that, and I would have no qualms about recommending it to anyone who wanted to try it out. I’ll definitely incorporate some of the moves I learned using the resistance band, but I’m not totally sure I’ll do the whole DVD again. DVD Review: Hoopnotica - Hoopdance Workout

After seeing Marisa Tomei’s outrageous hooping skills on The Ellen DeGeneres Show , I was inspired to check out the level two Hoopnotica DVD, Hoopdance Workout ($20). Marisa made those sexy moves look so easy, and even though I’m no hooping master by any means, if she could learn them from this DVD, I thought I’d give it a shot. This video begins with an eight-minute warmup of stretches using the hoop, and also includes some time to brush up on the skills you learned in the level one Hoopdance Basics DVD such as hip hooping, hooping in a circle, and corkscrews. Then it moves on to teaching you some new hoop skills that further challenge your upper body strength, coordination, balance, and creativity. I loved the instructor’s detailed instructions on how to do moves such as the swoop, hand off corkscrews, chest hooping, and hooping in angles. At the end of each chapter, there is a troubleshooting section, to show you how to work through any problems you may be having. This DVD moves pretty quickly, so I found it helpful to pause after every move so I could practice. I’m definitely not as smooth and sultry as Marisa or the instructor in the DVD, but trying out these new tricks made me feel like a kid. If you’ve never tried hooping, it really is a challenging and fun workout. You’ll end up working muscles you don’t normally work. Just make sure you’re using an adult-sized weighted hoop . To see a video clip of this level two Hoopnotica DVD, keep reading
