Do You Have Any Back-to-School Fitness Goals?

Truth be told, I’ve been out of school for a while now, but as Labor Day approaches, I get that back-to-school mind-set. I want a new pair of shoes , a fancy bag, and a fresh start - Summer is over and now it’s time to get back to business. Early Fall is similar to New Year’s Day in that I like to recommit to my fitness life and reevaluate my goals. The change in seasons inspires me too. One thing I am planning to do more of is adding plyometrics to my strength training and mixing up my cardio a bit more. Maybe even add some school-yard fun and jump rope . What about you? Do You Have Any Back-to-School Fitness Goals? Yes. And I will share them below. Nope.

Do You Feel Your Sports Bra Provides Enough Support?

After, I am assuming, plenty of observation hours of breasts in motion, researchers discovered that running produces more than just up-and-down motion in women’s chests. Breasts actually make a figure eight pattern. Even with this important discovery, no sports bra has yet to be designed to handle the lateral sway of breasts in motion. Neither compression bras that smoosh your chest into a uni-boob, or cup bras, which separate the girls, can keep your knockers from knocking about. Scientists from down under have figured out how to help us gals up top. The Aussie researchers observed that when running in water, large-breasted women didn’t experience much discomfort. Using compressed foam pads to simulate the buoyancy found in water, scientists created a bra that tamed both the side-to-side and up-and-down motion of runners’ breasts. Testers gave the prototype sports bar a high comfort ranking, but unfortunately no manufacturer has stepped up to use this cutting edge support technology to build a better sports bra. How do you feel about your fave sports bra? If you have one you love, share the deets with us in the comments section below. Do You Feel Your Sports Bra Provides Enough Support? Yes. I think my fave sports bra is supportive. No. My sports bra does only an adequate job. I can’t find a bra that works for me at all! Other - I will explain my situation below.

Has a Workout Ever Moved You to Tears?

A good workout often provides an emotional outlet for me; sometimes exercise is an even better outlet than talking about my problems. When I’m feeling stressed out, upset about something, or just need some time alone, sweating it out on a run or on my yoga mat always makes me feel better. Exercise can be like therapy, and at times the physical release has triggered an emotional one, so much so that it’s moved me to tears. Has this ever happened to you? Has a Workout Ever Moved You to Tears? Yes, I’ve cried while working out. No, I’ve never cried while exercising.

Do You Air Dry Your Workout Clothes?

At a recent event sponsored by a large sporting goods company, the director of marketing admitted she always tossed her workout gear into the dryer, technical fabrics included. Many of us gasped - it seemed sacrilege. The dryer breaks down the wicking fibers; it burns the spandex. Most of the clothes I wear when getting my sweat on are made with engineered fabrics that “transfer moisture” or were designed to cling in just the right way. Pretty much, if the garment is not 100 percent cotton, I air dry it on a clothes line or drying rack set up in my bathtub. My husband thinks I am a little crazy, but I truly believe keeping my fave fitness clothes out of the high drier heat extends their life and helps them keep their shape. While I know I am not alone in my obsession with line drying, some fitness fanatics go for the drier due to ease, lack of space, or serious humidity. What about you? Flickr User horiavarlan Do You Air Dry Your Workout Clothes? I air dry all my workout clothes. I only air dry occasionally. I never air dry my clothes. My method is more complicated, so I’ll explain below.

After running out of birth control pills last week, I called my doctor to ask for a refill. She went ahead and fulfilled my request, but not before I was gently scolded for ignoring an email reminder for my annual exam. I could tell that she preferred I had my annual before she renewed my BC, but probably thought that the consequences of missing a week’s worth of pills were too great. The happy ending is that I’m going in for my annual this week. But honestly, my annual exam might have been postponed even longer if I didn’t have a doctor that sent me email reminders. Tell me . . . Do You Measure Your Portions?

If losing pounds is on your mind, counting calories and keeping a food journal are great ways to stay on track and see results. In order to figure out how much you’re eating, it helps to measure your food rather than eyeball amounts. I know I used to pour “one cup of cereal” into my bowl in the morning, but one day I measured and realized I was eating almost twice that amount. If weight loss is your goal, overestimating portion sizes is one reason you may not see the scale budge. Some people find comfort in measuring and weighing everything from salad dressing, to chicken, to peanut butter, so tell me . . . Do You Measure Your Portions? Yes, and it helps me stay on track weight-wise. I used to, but I don’t anymore. No, I’m not into measuring my portions.

This photo of a swimmer getting an early morning workout in London’s Hyde Park makes me want to jump into a freshwater lake. Swimmers have been taking the plunge in the park’s Serpentine Lake for more than 140 years. Do you ever swim for fitness in freshwater, such as a lake or (stretching the definition of “freshwater” ) a dumpster pool ? Do these photos make you want to try it? Are You a Treadmill Talker?

I have two workout buddies , one I work out with during the week and one on the weekends. My weekday buddy and I chat while walking to the gym and getting ready, but then we divide and conquer once it’s time to work out. We both put in our headphones and go at it in silence. My weekend friend and I spend the first 20 minutes or so on side-by-side treadmills, StairMasters, or ellipticals catching up on life before splitting up to do our separate workouts. To talk, or not to talk? Personally, I don’t have a major preference either way. It’s definitely easier for me to focus on pushing myself when I’m not trying to chat in between breaths , but it also passes the time quicker - time flies when you’re having fun, right? What kind of workout partner are you? Are You a Treadmill Talker? Yes, I talk with friends while working out. No, I put my headphones in and stay in the zone. It depends on the day and the workout buddy.

Do You Beat Yourself Up If You Fall Off the Health Wagon?

Confession: I am feeling like a bit of a sham lately. Because a friend was visiting last week, I sort of deterred from my normal health routine. I haven’t been to the gym in over a week, and I feel like my food choices have been questionable at best. While my friend was visiting, I didn’t think twice about skipped workouts and eating out every day, but now that she’s gone I’ve started to feel a little down on myself. Before sinking into a major slump, I’m kicking my fitness routine back into full gear. I’ve got a gym date scheduled for tonight, and I’m signed up for two Pilates classes later this week. I also bought a week’s worth of fresh produce at the farmers market yesterday to inspire me to eat healthier than I have been. And while I’m a little upset for neglecting what’s important, I know that I’ll be back on track in no time, so it’s better not to beat myself up too much. Tell me . . . Do You Beat Yourself Up If You Fall Off the Health Wagon? Yes, I get down on myself when I neglect my health. No, it’s counterproductive.

Rachel Bilson Thinks Celebrity Body Image Gets Too Much Attention - Do You?

A lot of emphasis is put on a celebrity’s appearance. From style choices to diet and workout regimens, people are interested in how celebs look. At FitSugar, we’d be lying if we said we weren’t a part of this. And on a personal level, I’ll admit that I’m interested in Cameron Diaz’s arm workout , or what Summer foods celebs are snacking on . But we hope these sorts of stories are sources of healthy inspiration, and not cause for insecurity. In the September issue of InStyle UK , Rachel Bilson said that the amount of emphasis placed on celebrity body image is too much. “You know what I hate? The amount of attention that is put on weight and body image. It is so backwards and sends out the wrong message. ‘What do you eat? Do you work out?’ It’s not what young girls should be stressing about. They look up to these actresses and read about plastic surgery and what they do and don’t eat. I eat, I love food, I wanna eat when I wanna eat. If you are not feeling good about yourself, then you work out. But you do it for you.” I love that Rachel Bilson says that she loves food, and that it’s important to work out for yourself. And even though I agree that the media has a huge role in shaping body image perceptions, I hope that it can be a positive one too. (Though I know, unfortunately, that this is not always the case.) I want to know if you agree . . . Rachel Bilson Thinks Celebrity Body Image Gets Too Much Attention - Do You? Yes, too much emphasis is placed on celebrity diet and fitness. No, I like hearing what the stars do to stay healthy.
