Filed under: Diet & Weight Loss , Celebs & Entertainment (C)Jill Johnson, jpistudios.com Just a couple of weeks after going on the Master Cleanse with husband Ashton Kutcher and claiming it was “all about health,” Demi Moore is defending a new, “healthier” diet , reports The Huffington Post. Moore tweeted yesterday that she had only lasted four days on the Master Cleanse (which consists of drinking only a mixture of lemon juice, maple syrup, water and cayenne pepper several times a day, plus the occasional glass of salt water and an herbal laxative tea), but was currently on day 13 of the Clean Program . The Clean Program is a 21-day diet of smoothies and dinner salads created by Dr. Alejandro Junger , and according to Moore, it’s ” far healthier and more liveable ” than the Master Cleanse. We have to wonder if the constant dieting is making Moore a bit moody, however, as she’s been a little testy in some of her tweets. When a follower said she thought a healthy diet and exercise was the best way to go, Moore replied , “@chazzyb31 I think you need to research what it is I am doing there is no starving involved! It is all about nourishing the body!” What do you think? Are you more likely to stick to a regular diet and exercise routine, or do you rely on diets like these for weight loss? Recipe Rehab: Chicken Salad

Filed under: Recipe Rehab with Tanya Zuckerbrot , Nutrition & Supplements Leigh Beisch, Getty Images Summertime salads make for a cool meal that requires minimal cooking — especially perfect for a midday lunch in the heat of the day. Whether full of greens, pasta or potato variety or in a sandwich, salads often grace my own table in the summer. Most salads have a pretty healthy base, but not all dressings are created equal. Mayonnaise-based dressings can add a couple hundred calories to each serving, so a typical chicken salad sandwich could have up to 500 calories . In this lightened-up version of chicken salad, I have swapped half of the mayonnaise for non-fat Greek yogurt, which reduces fat calories and adds more protein and calcium to the sandwich. Additionally, I will chop up some vegetables to replace some of the higher-calorie ingredients , thus bulking up the volume of the salad while reducing total calories. Feel free to try this dressing substitution in all of your favorite summer salad mixes. Ingredients: 1/4 cup light mayonnaise 1/4 cup non-fat Greek yogurt 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon dried dill (or 1 teaspoon fresh) 2 cups cooked chicken breast, chopped 2 stalks celery, chopped 1/2 cup red bell pepper, chopped 1/2 cup green bell pepper, chopped 1/2 medium onion, chopped Instructions: 1. In a medium bowl, mix together mayonnaise, yogurt, lemon juice and spices. 2. Toss with chicken, celery, peppers and onion. Add additional seasoning to taste. The 10 Worst Beverages You Can Drink

Filed under: Diet & Weight Loss jupiterimages These beverages are — without exception — delicious. Some are creamy and thick. Some will chill you on a hot summer day. Others will warm you from the inside out. So what’s not to love? All of them are really, really bad for you. Men’s Health magazine has uncovered the unhealthiest beverages we regularly consume. And the worst of them all? It’s the Cold Stone PB&C in the “Gotta Have It” size of 24 oz. It has 2,010 calories , 131 grams of fat , of which 68 grams are saturated, and 153 grams of sugar . New "Make at Home" Jamba Juice Smoothies

After working out it’s really important to eat because it fuels lost energy and repairs damage to torn muscle. After my workouts I usually snack on an apple , some yogurt, or a fruit smoothie from Naked Juice . Supermodel Gisele Bundchen knows the importance of a post-workout meal too. Just last week she was spotted sipping on a Jamba Juice smoothie after leaving the gym. While a lot of the offerings at Jamba Juice can be calorie bombs , the chain does offer many low-calorie smoothies that can also be made with the addition of soy protein or nonfat yogurt. And in a new twist, it just started offering low-calorie “make your own smoothie” mixes at grocery stores. Each package makes two eight-ounce smoothies, totaling 120 calories each - all you have to do is add apple juice. Besides being low in calories, they’re made with real fruit, nonfat yogurt, and an antioxidant booster, and contain no corn syrup. So far only the chain’s three most popular flavors are being offered: Razzmatazz, Mango-a-Go-Go, and Strawberries Wild. I’m bummed because I haven’t seen any at my grocery store yet, but when I do, I am definitely going to try it. In the meantime I’m going to make smoothies from scratch, like this green smoothie , almond berry banana smoothie , or chocolate-espresso smoothie . Are you a smoothie-holic like I am? What’s your fave?

Smarter Eats: Freeze Fruits and Veggies Before They Spoil

In the morning I always make a breakfast smoothie using fresh produce. But sometimes our household goes a little overboard in the amount of produce we buy. Instead of throwing out spoiled fruits and veggies, we freeze our produce to preserve its nutritional content and halt the ripening process. Freezing produce is also a good way to stock up on fruits and veggies that are on sale or going out of season. If there’s an abundant amount of produce in our house, we estimate how much we’ll need to last the rest of the week and then freeze the rest. Produce is best frozen when it’s perfectly ripe, and it can last in the freezer for up to a year. To find out how to freeze produce at home, read more. When it comes to fruit, wash, peel, and dice before freezing. Put the fruit slices onto a cookie sheet and freeze overnight, then transfer the frozen fruit pieces into moisture proof containers. By freezing fruit on a cookie sheet first, you avoid ending up with a massive block of frozen fruit later. Although I freeze fresh fruit as is, you can use sugar to maintain a fruit’s flavor, color, and texture if you won’t be using it soon after freezing. Lemon juice can also be used to preserve the color of fruits that would normally brown when exposed to air, like apples or pears. Before freezing vegetables, it’s highly recommended that you blanch them first . Blanching halts the action of vegetable enzymes which cause veggies to lose their color, flavor, and texture. Keep in mind that blanching time varies depending on the vegetable , and you want to make sure that veggies are cooled before you freeze them. Frozen veggies can be used in the same way you would use frozen vegetables from the grocery store . If freezing produce is not for you, find other ways to use ripe fruits and veggies before they spoil like making sauces, stocks, or jams. In the end, we’re all better for limiting our waste. Speak Up: Receiving Fitness-Inspired Gifts

Last year I gave my mother-in-law the Core Fusion Pilates DVD , and when she opened it, I could tell by her face that she was not pleased. With lips pressed, she looked over the front and back, placed it in her pile of gifts, and halfheartedly said, “Thanks.” It seems she believed I was implying she was overweight, but I just wanted to share my favorite fitness DVD with her - she often complains about having trouble fitting fitness into her life. I thought we were close enough, but I probably should have prefaced the present before she ripped open the paper. I guess fitness-inspired gifts are not for everyone. I, for one, love being on the receiving end of health- or fitness-inspired presents and have a few on my list, but how do you feel about receiving them? Would you be offended? Would it matter what type of gift or who the giver was?

Jessica Biel: Fittest Female Celeb of 2009

You must really like Jessica Biel because she’s done it again. The actress received the majority of your votes for fittest female of 2009 - an accolade she won from you in 2007 and again in 2008 . Though Jessica was a little quiet on the acting front this year, she and beau Justin Timberlake were seen all over town running , hiking , and walking her dogs . When it came to working out solo she really stepped it up with boot-camp-style workouts , as well as specially designed sessions from her trainer, Jason Walsh . Walsh shared that the secret to Jessica’s toned physique is commitment, something all of you obviously agree with! But Jessica really impressed us in 2009 by announcing her involvement with two charitable organizations, and using her love of fitness to do so. In January, Jessica will be trekking up Mt. Kilimanjaro for the charity Summit on the Summit , a group dedicated to educating the public about the need for clean drinking water worldwide. This is a cause that is dear to her heart because in October she helped announce the Live Earth Run For Water , a series of worldwide 6k runs which will take place next April to benefit the global water crisis. With the momentum of winning three years in a row, we can’t wait to see where Jessica’s fit lifestyle takes her next year.

Healthy Eating Tip: Add Greens to Smoothies

When I recently posted my Almond Berry Banana Yogurt Smoothie recipe , FitSugar reader andrennabird had a brilliant idea - add greens to your smoothies. It’s a great way to get more nutritious leafy greens into your diet, without even tasting them. The sweet fruit and creamy yogurt hide the earthy flavor, and since you blend the greens up, there’s no chewing involved. I like adding spinach, but you can also try kale, arugula, or sprouts . Just add a few cups of greens to your favorite smoothie recipe, and sip away. Experiment with combinations to see which taste the best, and if you’ve come up with any delicious concoctions, please share them below.
