How to Sneak Fitness Into the Most Relaxing of Vacations

“Vacations are not meant for fitness.” This quote is from a dear friend of mine; the two of us are driving down the coast for Labor Day. While it’s true that I usually don’t plan my vacations around fitness , I like being active - even when away from home ! But I get it, it’s Labor Day, the last hurrah before Summer ends, and my friend wants nothing but fun in the sun. Since she’s doing all the driving, I’m definitely not going to suggest a yoga session on the beach . But that’s because I have something even better in mind. Instead of framing activities in terms of fitness and exercise, I’ve got a few fun suggestions that will keep her smiling, and me active. Let’s go ride a bike . Riding bikes in the Summer sun can’t be beat, especially when it’s along a beach boardwalk. Once we hit Los Angeles, I’m looking forward to renting a couple of bikes and cruising along the Santa Monica beach boardwalk . Book a spa date . A visit to the spa is not only an indulgent way to hang with a girlfriend, it’s also a great way to relax. Schedule a massage to de-stress, relieve sore muscles, and boost immunity levels. See how we’ll be spending our nights when you read more. Dance the night away . A night out at the club can be super fun, and dancing is a great way to burn calories . Just make sure to keep everything in moderation so you don’t spend the next day nursing a hangover . Make a healthy meal feel indulgent . Before we go, I am researching great spots to dine out that also have a reputation for being healthy or offering local, organic food. My friend will feel like we’re having a decadent meal out, and I’ll still be able to find something on the menu that suits my healthy diet.

Venus Williams Hates Elbow Planks but Loves Football

Having just turned 30, Venus Williams has been playing tennis professionally for half of her life. She is one busy athlete: gearing up for the US Open, teaching tennis clinics , selling her EleVen designs on Gilt , and promoting her new book Come to Win . Yet when I spoke with Venus recently, she seemed more like her sister’s namesake, serene. Easy to laugh while maintaining a thoughtful focus, Venus and I chatted about fitness, fashion, and football. FitSugar: Describe a typical day of training for you. Venus Williams: I get up in the morning and I go to the court for about two hours or three hours and then I go to the gym for another two hours or three hours. A lot of time I will stretch and do rehab for an hour. It’s kind of a nine to five thing with a full day of working out. I do anything like ride the bike, the elliptical, swimming, or sprinting things like that. And I do arms, legs, and core. FS: So what’s your fave core exercise? VW: (chuckles) I don’t know if I have a favorite core exercise. FS: Well then is there an exercise you love to hate. VW: I don’t like prone holds. Do you know what that is . . . it’s an elbow plank. I don’t like planks. I don’t like slow and tedious exercise. Ones that you have to do on both sides. Those really get me down. FS: How do you feel about running? VW: Running is OK. I like swimming a lot. Swimming is my favorite cardiovascular activity. Lately I have been swimming in the ocean too. The water has been real calm in Florida this Summer and it’s real flat. I call it lake Atlantic . . . get in and go for a swim. Learn how Venus feels about food when you read more. FS: What is your fave recovery meal and/or snack? VW: I don’t know. I am one of those people that eats to live and not lives to eat. So I don’t know. It is hard to choose. Probably beans and rice and blackened chicken. FS: Do you ever work out with Serena? VW: We work out at the same time, but we might be doing something specific to what we need. I might need something different from her. But I might see her doing a nice exercise and I am like “I am going to copy that.” FS: Both Marathoner Kara Goucher and basketball legend Lisa Leslie told me that if they could be an elite athlete in another sport they would choose tennis. If you could be an elite athlete in another sport what would you choose? VW: Football! FS: Why? VW: I don’t know. (laughs) I just love it. You get out there and talk trash. Run hard, you make the play. It just seems awesome! Stay tuned for more of my conversation with the fourth-ranked tennis star. We talk more about tennis, touch on fashion, and why Venus cleans her tennis togs with Tide plus Febreze Freshness Sport .

Weight Loss Sacrifices: What Would You Give Up?

Filed under: Diet & Weight Loss Corbis A recent study revealed people are more than willing to make important sacrifices for weight loss; however, there’s a catch: They’re sacrificing the wrong things. The findings of the survey were a bit surprising to say the least. More than half of American women and a quarter of American men said they’d sacrifice an entire summer of sex if it meant avoiding 10 pounds of weight gain. Additionally, more Americans would choose losing 10 to 20 pounds this summer over receiving a job promotion. In this economy, that shows us how desperate Americans are to get fit. Keep in mind this is all hypothetical. When it comes down to it, these Americans are simply dreaming of weight loss rather than actually doing something about it. We asked our readers about their most difficult weight loss sacrifices — check out what they had to say. Cathie H. Junk food. Joyce M. Sugar and white flour, i lost most of my weight low carbing. Do You Air Dry Your Workout Clothes?

August 19, 2010 by admin

At a recent event sponsored by a large sporting goods company, the director of marketing admitted she always tossed her workout gear into the dryer, technical fabrics included. Many of us gasped - it seemed sacrilege. The dryer breaks down the wicking fibers; it burns the spandex. Most of the clothes I wear when getting my sweat on are made with engineered fabrics that “transfer moisture” or were designed to cling in just the right way. Pretty much, if the garment is not 100 percent cotton, I air dry it on a clothes line or drying rack set up in my bathtub. My husband thinks I am a little crazy, but I truly believe keeping my fave fitness clothes out of the high drier heat extends their life and helps them keep their shape. While I know I am not alone in my obsession with line drying, some fitness fanatics go for the drier due to ease, lack of space, or serious humidity. What about you? Flickr User horiavarlan Do You Air Dry Your Workout Clothes? I air dry all my workout clothes. I only air dry occasionally. I never air dry my clothes. My method is more complicated, so I’ll explain below.

Red Face When Exercising: Normal or Not?

August 16, 2010 by admin

We may not look the prettiest after a workout with our sweaty skin, streaked mascara, and disheveled hair, but it’s nothing a little shower can’t handle. One thing you may be concerned with though when it comes to your post-workout appearance is a beet red face. Don’t be alarmed. That ruby-red flush is just a sign that you’re working hard and building up heat . When your temperature begins to rise, your smart little body perspires to keep itself cool, but it also dilates the blood vessels in your skin to reduce your body temperature (aka vasodilation ). This circulates blood to your skin’s surface so that heat can radiate off of it. So have no fear - your face turns bright red because warm, oxygenated blood rushes to it as a way to prevent you from overheating. This is a good thing and nothing to be worried about. To learn when a flushed rosy face might be an indication of a problem, read more. If your red face is coupled with symptoms of feeling exhausted or dizzy, sweating more than normal, or nausea, then it could be a sign of heat exhaustion . You’re especially at risk in this hot Summer weather, so if you’re experiencing all these symptoms, stop exercising ASAP, get out of the sun, loosen up tight clothing (or remove it all together), and drink plenty of cool water. Tell me, does your face get especially red when you exercise?

Beat the Heat: 5 Ways to Stay Fit and Cool

August 13, 2010 by admin

Filed under: Fitness Getty It’s no secret that this summer’s temps have been some of the highest in history. With increased risk of dehydration , diminished air quality in some areas and air so thick it feels as if you’re moving through humidity soup , it’s no wonder you’ve lost your motivation . So how are you supposed to keep active in a summer so hot that the only thing most people feel like doing is hibernating until fall? We’ve got five tips to keep you going and beat the heat . 1. Move in the Morning Be an early bird with your outdoor workout when temperatures are lower and air quality is at its best. According to a variety of international studies, car emissions and other pollutants (which can trigger a slew of breathing problems) are less ostensible in the a.m. If you prefer to run in the evenings, take to a park. Streets have higher levels of carbon monoxide, according to research conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency . And no matter what time you head outdoors, slather on a sweat-proof sunscreen 30 minutes prior to extended sun exposure. A light spray formula, such as Coppertone Sport Clear Continuous Spray, makes all-over application a cinch. 2. Make a Splash Cool off with a dip. Swimming is one of the best workouts out there. It is low-impact, cardio-enhancing activity that also strengthens and tightens muscles. Other water sports also offer full-body benefits. Kayaking targets the core and arms, windsurfing enhances balance and upper-body strength, and waterskiing challenges the entire body. Mix it up and try stand-up paddle surfing, a Hawaiian import that has been making a splash across the country. Water’s reflective properties can make the damaging effects of the sun even stronger. Protect skin with a wide-brimmed hat and wear UV-blocking sunglasses at all times. And opt for clothing with sun-shielding properties such as Patagonia’s W Sunshade shirt. 3. Stay Indoors Watch The Weather Channel and it’s easy to see that many cities are issuing heat advisories. So although the sun is shining, staying inside may be a healthier option. Try a new class at your gym or, better yet, keep it moving at home. Choose a video that challenges your fitness level but is still doable. Some of our favorites include “YogaWorks Body Slim” , “Denise Austin Best Leg & Bun Shapers” and “Beachbody Insanity.” 4. Drink Up Post-exercise, switch from summertime favorite lemonade to water with lemon and you’ll save calories. According to a recent study, those who consume sweet drinks after exercising tend to overeat afterward. Lemon water not only curbs caloric intake but also prevents dehydration, keeps potassium levels in check and can even banish bloat. Make sure you drink water every 15 to 20 minutes while exercising in the heat. Want a little more flavor? Unsweetened iced tea can amp up antioxidant intake . Bonus: Green tea has been linked to metabolism boosting properties. 5. Find Balance Sweating can be positive (the action eliminates waste), but it can also strip the body of much-needed nutrients. Along with potassium, salt is lost through sweating. Replenish the nutrient with body-benefiting foods like olives (which help heart health), low-fat cheese (which has been linked with weight loss) and almonds (a good source of fiber and protein). We know that you’re likely to drink water in the summer to combat the heat, but does water help you lose weight ? Permalink | Email this | Comments

Can Software Fight Fat? The USDA Thinks So

Filed under: Diet & Weight Loss Getty Can playing a video game help us lose weight? If it’s the right kind — one that’s geared toward teaching about how to eat better and get more exercise — that’s exactly what the U.S. Department of Agriculture is banking on. Earlier this summer it launched the Apps for Healthy Kids contest as part of Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign. Programmers, game developers, software designers, and students alike were invited to submit games and tools based on USDA nutrition information and conceived to make healthy living fun and interactive for kids, particularly ‘tweens (ages 9-12). Twelve winners will be announced on Saturday August 14, and awarded a total of $60,000 at a White House ceremony this fall. Judging most of the contest is a who’s who of tech gurus (among them Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak). However, for two categories, we the people have the pick. If you click onto the USDA site anytime this week , you’ll be able to vote for the two people’s choice honorees among the nearly 100 entries. A sampler of apps you can test out and weigh in on: ” Revolting Vegetables ” (Eat them before they eat you.) ” Mogi Eats ” (Figure out how to feed a ridiculously cute avatar a balanced diet, and help him work off some calories by picking out exercises for him.) ” Ration Roulette ” (Please your restaurant’s customers by effectively portioning food to meet daily nutrition requirements.) ” Smash Your Food ” (Pick a food, guess the amount of sugar, salt and oil it contains, then smash it up and watch the bad stuff accumulate to see if you were right. It’s surprisingly satisfying.) Find one you like? Here’s a good reason to give it a go: Studies are showing that seemingly simple tech-based weight loss strategies, such as using fitness and nutrition mobile apps or tweeting your meals, can be highly effective in keeping adults slim and healthy too.
